Hinckley Announces the Sou’wester 53 Carbon Epoxy Sailing Yacht

PORTSMOUTH, RI (March 16, 2018) —  Hinckley, the builder of America’s finest yachts for 90 years, has unveiled today a new chapter in it’s long sailing history and in the storied heritage of the Sou’wester line of cruising yachts. The new Sou’wester 53 is the first to deliver modern, family sailing with a beautiful inside-out layout so you can enjoy it all together. The Sou’wester 53 is more than just a social experience with friends and family on a lively, modern yacht. It is also about reconnecting with the pure joys of sailing which have been somewhat lost on today’s widebody cruising catamarans. “We are thrilled to announce the Sou’wester 53 today”, said Pete Saladino, Chief Marketing Officer at Hinckley. “She is a beauty and a performer with a new take on social space and use”. The design was produced in collaboration with Tripp Design Naval Architecture.

Built in carbon epoxy from bow to stern, the Sou’wester 53 features a modern performance hull with the latest keel stem and bulb shape. Her draft of 8 feet 3 inches will provide for lively performance while enabling visits to harbors and coves where yachts of similar performance could not ordinarily venture. Hinckley’s time-honored infusion method is now infusing epoxy resin in a single chemical bond to secure the carbon hull to the structural grid. When the sun is shining and the weather is favorable, you can leave the protected pilothouse for the stern helm station to feel the wheel in your hand and the wind in your hair. The helm station is raised for views over the pilothouse and a full view of the sail plan. The ability to choose helm stations as the weather changes makes a world of difference. As does the ability to either sail or motor at over 10 knots. After nearly 25 years of building Picnic Boats and Talaria motor yachts designed to maximize entertainment space with utility, the Sou’wester 53 brings this inside-out entertainment focus to our timeless sailing yachts.
